Weekend at Damai Puri Resort & Spa

Few days after I’ve touched down from China, my friends and I planned for our trip to Damai Puri, which is around 30 plus kilometres from Kuching city. Previously, it was known as Damai Lagoon and now Damai Puri Resort and Spa. To ask for my opinion about this resort, I’ll say 50 positives and 50 negatives. Not much change from Damai Lagoon except renovated rooms and pools which are satisfactory as they are renovated into a better and modern concepts. One of the pools has very nice view as the swimming pool and the sea was designed to look like they met each other. As our room comes with complimentary breakfast, we are given a chance to take a tour on those food. Breakfast here are not that good, to be frank, not much choices of food. If you are going to pay for the breakfast, I’ll advise a no.

Inlign view, pool looks blueish but the water is not clean at all ! Wonder how often do they make a clean up.

Dim Sum at Gingko Restaurant, Chengdu

We went Gingko Restaurant today in Chengdu. They serve very nice Cantonese dim sum. Eating out in China concerns a lot of doubtful people. Doubting whether they are hygienic! Which is the main issue. This restaurant is very clean from inside out. They have open-kitchen and very cozy and clean washroom. Food are nice, place are clean, great !

Wow…hold on! That’s not a car of food we ordered. Waitress push a car of dim sum and desserts, “FYI” only… They bring hot from oven dim sum and desserts for you later on after order.

Chinese Embassy Kuching Moved

I went Chinese Embassy at 3 1/2 mile last week and found they’ve moved ! I’m not even aware of it ! So this morning i drove my way to 2 1/2 mile Ong Tiang Swee Road, heading the Embassy again. It took me 15 minutes from my house to reach there, enter the room, 5 minutes later i’m out of the room ! Very fast huh ! The new place is quite cozy, not in the sense of the interior but the cooling and deem-lighting room. They only operate from 9am to 1130am. They used to operate from 9am to 12pm and now they’ve shorten it to 1130am. Two and half hours !!! It must be nice working in there, not much job, cooling room, short working hours (although it should be their time for printing and scanning job during the afternoon) etc.

Anyway, the procedure is pretty simple (Malaysian)
1) Passport
2) A passport size photo (light background colour)
3) Application form
4) Itinerary of enter and departing China

That’s it !!

Sashimi and Sushi

I went to a Japanese Restaurant for sashimi the other day. Tomoe Japanese Cuisine is popular with it’s fresh food. Well, at least i went for a few times and things are fresh to me. Sashimi for that night was satisfactory. Dipping with wasabi and when sashimi lies on your tounge, you will then close your eyes to enjoy the fresh, sweet, soft and melting piece of fish.

Some people doubted that is it good for health by consuming raw fish. Well, it actually depends. While fresh, raw fish is definately a healthy food. If you are eating out in restaurant, it could be a problem choosing the right restaurant serving fresh fish.

Sushi, or Sashimi may be one of the best sources of nutrition. They are packed with protein, dense with nutrients and they are low in fat ! They are definitely an excellent source of lean protein and contains very little heart clogging saturated fat. Fat available is mostly in the form of Omega 3 fatty acids.

The only type of food borne illness you can get from sushi is from a certain type of worm but sushi chefs are trained to remove this. How about the presence of parasites in raw fish? Eventually, most parasites cannot adopt to human hosts, frequently. If an infected fish is eaten, parasites are simply digested with no-ill effects.

A Dine Away from Kuching City

We drove almost 30 minutes from Kuching city to reach this small town named Batu Kawa. Although it was quite a long drive, we were determined to get our money’s worth from every dishes we ordered, food was really tasty and dirt cheap. It only cost us RM47 for food (four dishes) and drinks! Besides, we requested for the smallest portion and food came to us was not what we think as “small”, the portion is quite big.

Food Valley Seafood

Butter Squid (strongly recommended by JoyceLiew.com) – Sliced squids were nicely coated with tasty butter. Some squids were the size of a bracelet. I don’t think you can get anything like this in Kuching city and yet, it’s only RM 8 !

Fried Tofu – Their signature tofu if i’m not mistaken. It looks like tofu was wrapped with a thick layer of flour. Apparently, it’s not; it’s crunchy ! And it’s only RM 6.

Crab – I think this is the cheapest crab you can get in Kuching; RM 18 only.

Prawn Paste Chicken (strongly recommended by JoyceLiew.com) – Strong prawn paste taste with tender chicken, RM 8.

Green Heights Mall

How many more malls is Kuching going to build? Green Heights Mall is one of the recently open malls. After one week of operation, Cold Storage, Guardian and Got Gifts? are the few in operating. Cold Storage was opened on 13 June, that most people rushed there for the first few days, as Kuching people always do.

Few malls were launched for the last 6 to 8 months in Kuching; Boulevard (low to middle end), The Spring (middle to high end) and now Green Height Mall (middle to high end). Rivalry between these three malls can be seen. Meanwhile, the different location of them flood them with different target market. So how long could these malls survive, or should i say how long will tenants in these malls survive, we’ll see then.

After all, stuffs stored in Cold Storage are satisfactory. Although most of the brand are commonly seen, products are seem to be different after an hour of glancing through the storage. Things are fresh, range of choices, not too expensive…
