Avoid the Worst Mistakes in Building a WebSite
By joyce on Feb 20, 2008 in The Net
The Internet is the lowest cost system ever developed which allow the interaction or communication with hundreds of millions of people all over the world. Why some companies are damn successful in building their site while some failed to? Powerful sites drive their audiences back and there is no excuse of poor designed Websites now days. Most people developed Websites to roll money (like me!) and some are towards pure information providing (are there?). When you are serious about making money online, spend some time familiarizing yourself with the dos and don’ts of HTML, XML, JavaScript and other Wed design technologies are vital. So what are the common mistakes?
- Broken links
Avoid broken links which lead your readers to nowhere, the dead pages. This results in showing the possibility of lack of updating. Links that bring your readers to the dead pages could drive them away. So, there might be some ways to avoid this such as by redirecting your readers to your homepage. - Jumping through hoops to get the “meat”
We all hate visiting a site that needs us to move our fingers clicking few clicks into a page that we want. Especially when we reached a site alerting, “You need the latest <software> to view the following page. Please download here!” Apparently, we will leave the page immediately. Believe it, too much clicking to reach a “meat” is not going to win readers’ favor. - Broadband vs. Phone Modem
You might have a broadband which allows fast connection but up to 95% of all Internet users worldwide use telephone modems that take minutes and not seconds, to download a Web page that is full of large graphics and complicated HTML formating. If your site takes others more than 10 seconds to load, you are losing your readers. Keep your site as simple as possible for fast loading and keep your images in low resolution as high resolution images are bigger in size which need longer time in loading. - Crashing readers’ browsers
This could be the worst Web site sin you should avoid. Browser crashes are usually caused by poor JavaScript or code generated by “easy” Web site creation software. HTML, Java and JavaScript writing need skills to prevent coding crashes. The more complicated these coding are, the more skills it takes to make everything work right.
There are many more mistakes that a Web site owner might make. We might not be able to create a mistake-less site, but we can always avoid it. Look into more good Web sites to gain updated knowledge is a must for Web site owners. The more you are active in the Internet, the more you know why other Web sites work well and not yours!
